First I have a serf 525 and I use 30w oil in it in summer is this ok would it be better to use 40w or even 50w in it or should i stick with the 30w or even the 10w-30. it is a briggs 5 horse. Second my brother has a Kohler should he be using 30w or should he use 10w 30. can you give an explanition as to why for both of these questions.

Hello Tragu, The 30w detergent oil for your serf is what I would use but don't use the 40 or 50 weight as it is to heavy for your engines use. The Kohler if the older cast iron engine can also use the 30w oil. But if it is the newer ohv over head valve engine should use the 10w30 for summer use. The ohv engines need the thinner weight oil for the for head valves other wise damage can been done to the lifters losing there prime from to heavy weight of oil because the heavier weight oil being thicker does not get into the lifters like it should. I may have the lifter part mixed up but someone else can correct me at anytime ok. Good luck< >>->happyjack<-<<
