I have a 16hp Vangaurd that I picked up non-running. Now it running, almost. It starts hard, acts cold-blooded. It takes forever before I can take the choke off and then the RPM surges. The mixture screw does nothing! I can screw it all the way in or take it all the way out. After it warms up I can put the choke on full and that does not effect the performance. I even picked up another carb from a friend and installed it with the same results. What is wrong! The only thing I can think of is a vacuum leak, but where? Thanks

When you changed the carb, did you re-use the same solenoid valve (on the bottom of the float bowl) that was on the problem motor? -Don McLuckie

Well you got me on that one. I've heard of alot of things about carbs but this one is interesting. Ok my question would be how are your valves? It may be a vacuum leak, where, well check between the intake and the throttle body of the carb that may be sucking in way to much air wich would be running extremely lean. If that is fine then take your original carb. apart and check for the slightest bit of any cracks that may of been developed in the carb. If that is fine then I would do a re-build on that engine, make sure those valves are good. Those are the only suggestions I can think of, like i said that is very interesting, I never heard of an engine performance tht could run like that, good luck.
