My 3416H has no power in reverse

Hello, This little tractor has stump pulling power going forward but will not back up going uphill. Does anyone know what might be the problem with this hydrostatic transmission? I have checked the hydraulic fluid level and added some.

Hi and welcome to the club. If you look at the description to this part of the forum, you will see it is for bugs in the clubhouse and how it works, not bugs in tractors. I suggest you move this to the Talking Tractors area or repost it there - that is where most of this type of question will be seen most and answered quickly. Sorry I have no direct knowledge of your problem.

sounds like an adjustment problem. I have 416 that was doing the same thing. You need to adjust the linkage some but not much as a little can go a long way.If you back it off too much you won't have full speed forward.Hope this is all as this is an easy fix.

Thanks Dave but you have to adjust it so it doesn't move in the neutral detent of the linkage. Is there another adjustment?

Hi, Suspect the little double ball joint link on the shift arm of the transmission is worn. Make sure the rear end assy is tight to the tractor frame plates. If the bolts get loose, the rear end can move a little and change the linkage when you go forward or back up. Al Eden

As Al stated, the linkage being worn can have dramatic affects on the performance of the hydro drive. ANY wear in the linkage can effect it greatly. Also check the drive belt for proper tension. The clutch isn't normally used on the hydro's and can get siezed up and not keeping the idler tight on te belt causing the weak conditions.

I dont think its the belt because he said it has "stump pulling power going forward. If it was the belt it would also affect forward travel. I will be the third to say that my 3416H has absolutely no pulling power in reverse as well.

Thanks everybody. I believe I found the answer on mytractorforum.com. Here is a link to the thread. http://mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=51577 I am going to do the suggested modification of the linkage to get more travel. It seems like a good idea to me. I hope this helps cojo92 and Zach.

I had a 7016H that had little power in reverse. That tractor had a Sundstrand Hydro, and one of the release valves, used to push it when not running, wasn't releasing completely.

I did that linkage modification discussed on mytractorforum.com this morning (http://mytractorforum.com/showthread.php?t=51577), but I did it my way. I am a welder so I removed the linkage lever and simply cut it in half with a hacksaw and welded it back together. I clamped the two pieces to a brass angle, positioned so that the finished lever will be 1/8" longer, and filled in the gap with weld. The part was made of very hard steel. It was difficult to cut with a hacksaw. This is a better way to do the fix than making a whole new piece as suggested. It is also easier, if you have welding equipment. If anyone on here would like me to do the modification, just mail me your part. Let me know and I will provide the address. I would do it for $20. You pay shipping both ways. I posted an album on photobucket.com with photos of the process. The following pictures show the process. Now I have full power in forward and reverse. I'm a happy camper :)
