Front End Loader Model Mystery (515?)

Recommended Posts

I will try to get some pictures taken tonight or tomorrow, but I picked up a loader for my AC 914 this weekend. However, this loader seems a bit schizophrenic, and it doesn't match the parts diagrams I have seen. First, the Model/Serial no. tag state that it is an ARK 515 loader. It has a 515 sticker on each of the arms for the loader. Nowhere does it have a Simplicity sticker on the loader. On the front crossbar is an Allis Chalmers sticker. The loader is Simplicity white, apparently that way from the factory. Further, while all the parts diagrams that I have seen for the 515 show a single bucket cylinder, this one has two bucket cylinders. The hydraulic oil reservoir is not an upright tube steel cylinder on the front like shown in the parts diagram, but it is built into the left loader arm right below the hydraulic actuating levers (yes, the levers are on the left, not on the right like shown in the manuals. The frame that attaches to the bottom of the tractor looks nothing like the L-12 or 515 frame, but is a much more substantial single piece ladder frame made from tube steel. I'm a little perplexed, as it is not the same as those shown on the manuals for L-12 or 515. Does anyone have any ideas on whether this was tagged improperly, or whether there was a radical redesign to the 515?

Don, I promise you I will get some pics posted. When I unloaded the loader from my trailer last night to get pics, my wife informed me that our digital camera is at her business office. ngr2 I figured that having some pictures of this in its "original" form could not hurt, especially since I see so few of these loaders anywhere on the web or here. Dave, I guess I did not realize that ARK made aftermarket loaders with the same model number as the ones made for Simplicity. That would certainly make things confusing. This one has an under-tractor frame that is very similar to the ARK 600 loader shown by Kraig McConaughey here: http://www.simpletractors.com/gallery/km_620.htm . The rest of the loader is also nearly identical to the ARK 600, except the vertical arms on mine don't extend as high, and there is no horizontal bar attaching those two vertical arms over the top of the hood. I'm guessing that this must have been some hybrid model between the original 515 shown in the manual here on this site and the ARK 600 that came out later. Once I get some pics of the frame and loader uploaded, I'll get some opinions on whether the substantial frame that the loader attaches to adequately beefs up the tractor frame, or whether I should beef up the BGB like a few others have done here with some 1/4" plate steel.

Here are the pictures I promised. As you can see, the loader came with the tractor frame, loader arms, bucket, pallet bucket without the pallet forks, and counterweight. Minus the bolts, it all appears to be there and in good condition, but cosmetically rough. Nothing a wire wheel and some orange paint won't fix. Because it is white, I would guess (depending on size that this is for a 400 series AC or if too large then for the 620 or 720 AC. I do not know of any attachment for the 900 series that was white from the factory. Just a few of the early mower decks for the 700 series were white (carry over from the 400 series).

I was told that this loader was purchased from a gentleman who used to have an Allis Chalmers dealership. As such, I suppose that it is possible that this was a special order, or that he may have had access and motivation to place the Allis Chalmers sticker on the Ark loader, knowing that they were the manufacturer for Simplicity and L-12 loaders at the time. However, what really puzzles me is that this is listed as an ARK 515 loader, but it is nothing like the ARK 515 loaders that are shown in the Simplicity manuals: This one has two bucket cylinders instead of one, appears to use double action cylinders on all parts, has a completely different mounting system, and has the controls on the opposite side of the loader. Based on the diagrams for the ARK 515 and the L-12 shown here http://www.simpletractors.com/parts/l-12/l-12_loader.htm and here http://www.simpletractors.com/operation/515_loader/front_loader_515.htm this cannot be an L-12 or 515 loader, unless the 515 was radically changed at some point in time. If that is the case, I would love to see an operators manual for the updated ARK 515 like I have.
