Dads Simplicity Coronet

Go a call from my father, the local Simplicity dealer said he can't get a replacement engine. It currently has a Tecumseh 12.5 hp verticle engine. Unfortunatly siezed. The dealer wants to put a briggs into it, but will be extra labor to modify. Has anyone found a drop in replacement? They also came with Kohlers, wondering where I could find out what specific engine models came in this tractor and how dificult it would be to swap. I have never worked on it and have no manuals yet. Thoughts anyone?

Thanks Maynard, of the three engines he could have gotten, he managed to get the one that went out of business! Found a replacement Briggs for the Briggs engine version, just have to track down details to make sure it will fit in the Tecumseh version frame. Greg

Greg, If you are going to use this machine for mowing you will like it. I have one with the Tecumseh, bought it from a dealer with a thrown rod and overhauled it. It is the handiest mower I have ever used short of a zero turn. Very comfortable too. You won't regret putting in whatever it takes to make it run. I have an 11 h.p. briggs that I considered putting into mine, but wasn't sure if the electrical stuff would work. It has an electric clutch for the deck and thought the briggs wouldn't put out enough juice to keep battery up with that clutch engaged. So I stayed with the injun engine... so far so good. Good luck with yours! Steve

Steve, Brought Dads mower home, seems like his has thrown a rod also. He said he found some info on the web that this is common. Seems you need to run exactly full to slightly over full oil for the short slinger to oil properly. When you did yours did you need to replace the cylinder or just the rod, piston? Just trying to get him fixed as cheaply as possible. Thanks

I like Briggs, they still offer parts and service. If you are going to keep it that means something. But that said,OEM means a lot to some folks.
