"Lever too short"; That's my final answer, Regis!

[Final episode in Don's soap opera wherein Don is overwhelmed with buyer's remorse by a sticking/balky/jerky hydro control on his mid-90s Landlord] I put on the new belt, it helped a little. Really. All the linkage is free enough. I think the problem is that the lever is too #@!* short. It is a dash lever, moving horizontally. The horizontal arm is only a few inches long. And the total throw/movement at the end of the arm is quite short. So, a little movement equals a big change at the trans. I might (seriously) graft an extension on to it. And it that's not it, I'm taking my prize and going home, because I'm out of lifelines. :) PS: My wife says we're keeping it come what may. The yard at the new place is too sparse and cruddy to deploy a new machine on it. Sadly she's right. Yesterday it was like mowing in a dustbowl. But the Landlord does cut it well. Who knows, if it responds to the glandular extension, it may be with us a long time. -Don

Did you try to adjust the stop on the lever? It is toward the end of the spring and has a bolt running through it where you can adjust where it stops at? Just a thought.

No, I haven't adjusted the stop. The stop I see is a large cylindrical pair of steel stops that look like 1/2" thick washers. They are on a bolt at the last linkage point and they contact the wide flat brake linkage. I have a service manual coming in the mail and I will see what I can do after it comes.
