Briggs identification (pics added)

Hi I found a single cylinder B &S on CL for $35. It supposedly has a new carb on it, well new a few years ago. The carb replacement did not fix his issue, so the engine sat. He also claimed it to be a 15HP, but I wasn't aware they made odd HP #'s back then. The Model number name plate is there, but the model number cannot be made out. I think it is a 16HP. It is a rope start with the gas tank mounted to the engine. It isn't stuck. I'll post pics a little later. I'm sure it will be easily identified here. No correction needed... Briggs did make a 15hp engine. The 3415 was made in 1972/73 but was not pull start and did not have a gas tank mounted on it. I'm sure you could get that engine configured that way from Briggs, but why anyone would want to pull start that engine is beyond me.

A good UNOBSTRUCTED, look at the aluminum head will make it easier to determine. Seven bolt head rules out the 16, 15,12, and 10 hp early briggs used on Allis /Simplicity. I would go with John and Glen based on the 7 bolt and 3 bolt carb. I would also add the oil bath air cleaner and the slotted tin fly wheel cover also point toward a model 19. My 2cents.

Well, I'll take a better look at it tomorrow. I might have just purchased a spare that I really don't have a use for... Glad it is still '09 and I haven't all ready tarnished '10 yet! Appreciate the feedback. Rick

I would not be discouraged what ever it is. $35.00 do you have any idea what it would cost to replace this engine today. All and All I would say great buy the carb is worth that price. BOB

Just by looking at it, i'd say it is a model 23. I Found a 23DFB recently here in Ohio that was on a Log splitter. It looks identical to this one, even the gas tank on the side. Mine It even ran on the bench when I got it home. I put new rings in it, now its ready to go in the 64 Simplicity I have.

A closer look at the model number and I can make out "T 4". Doesn't seem to be anything else stamped in the model number slot. Type is 202043 and serial is 57871. A lot of mouse nest crap around the shroud and behind the flywheel. Trying to remove the flywheel, but it won't budge. Will soak it overnight.

By the serial #57871 I think it is a MODEL SERIES 23 L-HEAD, 3.0" BORE built in jan 1951 JMO. According to my old information, type numbers 202010 thru 202299 were Model 14. Their production run was from March '48 thru October '63. Guessing at a year built is a toughy as the type number could have been valid thru the whole build run, but knowing Briggs it died a favor of a new number, so will go with Maynard '48 thru '51.

A MODEL SERIES 14 L-HEAD, 2.625" BORE SN 57871 would make it Feb 1950. http://www.asecc.com/data/briggs/data4.html#23D Pull the head off and measure the bore dia.

Andy, the type number is strictly a bill of material number for manufacturing and parts identification which sort of holds true today. Today you need both model and type code to get get correct parts.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
