Recommended Posts

dOd Picked up new needle bearings for the pinion gears in my hi/lo gearbox of my Big 10. Had my Dad machine new pins for them to run on. Everything cleaned and ready to reassemble. Now folks I am looking for recommendations on what grease to use on the ring gear, sun gear and pinion gears and also in the needle rollers of the planetary set in the hi/lo. Thanks in advance for all recommendations and reasons why.^

In my hi-lo on my 616 yeoman, I packed it with good lithium grease. Any good grease will work, might want something recommended for high pressure use tho. Some of the hi-lo units like mine had a grease zerk on them to grease them, but mine has none, so I packed it good and it seems to be ok so far. Steve

I used a good high-temp lithium grease -- and quite a bit of it, so the pinion gears are running in grease. The Hi-Low for a B-series has a threaded hole for a grease zerk to grease it -- but you're supposed to remove the grease zerk after you've greased it and replace it with a small bolt, to avoid clearance problems like when running tire chains. I'd grease mine until I started to see grease about to come out the back side at the shaft...

Kent has it right. The hole for the grease fitting should be in the middle of the outer housing, you may have a short bolt or a set screw in yours if it has a grease hole. Mine was never drilled for a grease fitting. I did pack it pretty full of grease so it all is running in grease at all times. I left a bit of room so that it wouldn't get too stiff shifting when it gets cold out. Steve
