what is for ?

It makes a couple of engine that I take the sheet metal off to clean and paint,and I have noticed,that there his some kind of insulation(near the top of the engine)or his it a mice field nest ? And if it is insulation why there ? Thanks for the enlightment.

:D Mouse nests. There should be nothing between the fins on the head or cylinder to restrict the flow of cooling air.dOd

Michel. The material in the mouse nests could very well be insulation. Mice will use anything like that because it is easy to make a nest from. I have found chewed up newspaper,cloth bits,fiberglass insulation and the sprayed in kind in mouse nests over the years.
