How much spark is needed?

I have a Briggs generator I cant start. I changed plug, put gas in cylinder through spark plug, and pulled on starter till gas overflow carb float. I pulled plug out and there is a blue spark. I'm guessing its a points problem-how do you know when you have enough spark to start?

I assume you have good or reasonable compression. Then, as silly as it seems, try another spark plug. If you have a blue spark and 1/8" long or so, you don't have a points problem. Spark plugs are as fragile as they are strong, it's one of those unexplained things.

I forgot to say I put a new plug in.

Sheared flywheel key? Still have spark but the timings wrong?

Hit it with a little starting fluid and see if it starts. I'm guessing that your main jet is plugged. Had that problem with my generator recently.

had that problem with my 101 good spark but doesn't start , and what i did i put a kohler coil of my k301 on it and it fired right up.

problem solved- cleaned carb and took right off. thanks for the help
