Trans assembly problem

7016H trans. I have it all together and it spins inside very smoothly and easily. The problem is, when I put the other half of the case down (without a gasket to test it) and bolt the case halves together, it gets very difficult to turn (using my finger on the hydro drive gear thru the hole, or on the brake shaft). I am pretty sure I have it together right... the two washers under the gear on the brake shaft, and the slotted one fits into the tip of the key, as the book says. On the axle itself, the larger diameter washer is encasing the snap ring, as it's supposed to. What am I missing? Seems to me like you need the gasket in there to act as a shim to keep the halves from pinching everything together.

The gasket is $4.74 at Jacks the part number is 2166043SM. I believe there was a post a couple of months ago about permatex where someone stated the gasket wasn`t needed. http://simpletractors.com/club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=108449

Yeah, I'm using Permatex "The Right Stuff". Think I'm ok now. I have it together. I can turn it with a box wrench on the brake shaft. It turns smooth and pretty easy with the wrench. Plus, it's dry. When I get it back in the machine and fluid in it I think it'll be ok.

Please resize your pictures to 640 x 480 pixel size for posting. The oversize picture make a post very hard to read having to scroll side to side. Thank You.

Permatex will not provide the same thickness as a gasket. IMO, the gasket is most likely intergated into the clearence of the two haves. I like using a few drops of oil on parts like a tranny as I put it together just for that "first" lube.
