Kohler Magnum 18 HP rebuild.......

Recommended Posts

I am looking at a tractor with the 2 cylinder Kohler Magnum. Owner says it will not start-- but I saw it does crank over. I did not hear any bad noises when cranking. If it did need rebuild what would be the worst case -- needing parts if I did it myself??? It is on a Deutz Allis 1918-- owner is wanting $350. Everything else-deck/ tin/ transmission looks good.. Thanks.

Crankshaft would be the worst case at about $600 for a new one. Rods are about $65 each. Rings go for around $100 for 2 sets. Basically anything that must be replaced is pricey and you won't know what that is until you tear down the engine. If it's just an ignition problem it could still be expensive with the ignition module going for about $105. Before buying try to do a compression test since you may not always hear a broken rod and at least you'll have a better idea of what you're looking at. The magnums are good engines and worth fixing imo but it can get expensive.
