Testing a 12 Volt Ignition Coil---------

How do you test a 12 volt ignition coil other than knowing it is not working on the tractor?? (Battery, plug, points, condenser, ignition switch, starter and wiring are fine). Thanks.

check the primary resistance and compare it to a good coil. Check for continuity on the spark side (to ground), but be careful doing that as you definately do NOT want it making spark while you've got a meter hooked to it. That's about all you can do without an ignition scope where you could look for the change in waveform that comes with a shorted few turns in the coil. If it passes the meter test then go back and double check the stuff you "know" is good. "It isn't the stuff you don't know that will hurt you, it's the stuff you know for sure that just isn't so" (Twain, I think) At that point you'll have to swap the coil. If that works, cut the old one up and toss it, if it doesn't, now you have a spare coil while you sort it out. Don
