7117 Simplicity - PTO clone cutch, help

I have 7117 all hydrostatic tractor. Recently had trouble with pulley hanging up with black smoke when engaging the clutch. I disconnected the belt and played with it. It started working again. I think black smoke could be from brake lining material in the clutch plate assembly (page 28, 29 of manual). It seem like it was hanging up at first and then worked its way free. I want to take off the clutch plate assembly to examine the inside brake lining and possibly the bearing behind the pulley. However, I can not get it off. If I hold a wrench on the nut and another wrench on the nut for the drive belt pulley (other side of gear box) then drive belt pulley nut comes loose and not the clutch plate nut. The drive belt pulley has a lock washer I notice and the clutch plate assembly does not. Anyways, does anyone have any tips on how to get the clutch plate off? The shaft that runs from the clutch plate through the gear box and to the drive belt pulley continues to spin also, I dont know how to keep it from moving in order to get the nut off. Any special tools needed? Any help is appreciated. Thanks, MR

Seems like I used a pipe wrench on the driven shaft. I'm sure there's a better way to do it, but it worked.

you mean you took off the drive shaft pulley and put a pipe wrench on the drive shaft that is exposed and held it while you loosened the nut on the clutch plate assembly? MR

I just had one apart on Sunday....I used pneumatic impact wrench at 140 PSI to take it off. I remember the good old days....had to use a strap wrench and another set of hands to get that nut off.

Whenever I want to remove one of the nuts from either end of the BGB cross-shaft, I put an old heavy duty long screw driver (probably 3/8" dia shaft) up through the yoke on the input shaft of the BGB. Turn the nut I want off until the screwdriver hits the frame (and stops the cross shaft from turning), then a 1/2" breaker bar and socket do the trick. If I had an impact gun, it would probably work even better. Haven't had any problems with damage to the bevel gears so far.

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
