Broadmoor 717 steering- Fixed!

Recommended Posts

I had mentioned a really sloppy steering problem on my 717 earlier. Well, it was a bit of a mystery until I took the wheels off to replace the spindle bushings. When I looked at the spindle mounts(the vertical parts) it turns out they were castered/inclined over 30 degrees negative. That is to say, the top was forward of the bottom. Correcting was a chore. I had to have a heavy friend and my wife both stand on the front end while I pulled up on a pipe wrench extended with a 6 ft pipe. It worked and made a tremendous difference in the handling. It was running a literal 12 ft turning radius with not much deflection, now it runs the rated 3 ft radius and minimal scrub on the grass. Pix coming before and after...
