Engine ID Help

Recommended Posts

xenon172
A friend wants us to get this old Locke up and running for him. Problem is there are no ID tags or numbers on the the engine or machine so even the year is unknown. The engine is a cast iron Briggs, guessing 6 to 8 hp which use to have an ID tag so there are no numbers stamped in the housing. Anybody have any tricks to figure out what this engine is or a suggestion for a starting point.

a few years ago i had a model 14 b&s that had a tag riveted to the shroud. that motor drove a generator and i'm guessing, knowing the gent i got it from and his history, that that was a mid '50s motor. i currently have a model 19 with the riveted id tag on the shroud. that is on the spare 7 1/4 hp motor for my B-1 so that dates it to the early 1960's. i dont know how to tell them apart without pulling the head to measure bore and stroke. both motors looked like what you posted. btw; i have a nos-never had gas in it- tank, if you need one.
