KT19 Series 2 Help

I have two questions that I hope I can get help with: 1 - How the heck do you get these engines to not backfire when shutting them down. I have tried about every carb adjustment variation there is and I still get a backfire when turning the engine off. (would setting the idle speed super low help with this?) 2 - Just tonight, as I finished mowing the backyard and was idling back to the shed, I noticed smoke start to roll out from under the hood. I immediately shut the engine down, of course got a backfire, then noticed the oil seal on the front (PTO shaft) had popped out. Would the backfiring cause this and can a new seal be pressed in without having to remove the front cover? I did notice the oil seal is torn around the ID. Thanks for your help in advance. Mike

I took out 2 head gaskets from backfiring on the series 2 kt-17. You either have to idle them down for a while or choke it to death...

I have three of the KT17's and I never that problem before. I will agree with Burntime is to idle the engine for a little while. On your second question, take a hammer to start the seal back in the front cover, then take a good size punch and lightly tap around the outside of the seal until it is flush with the front cover. But before you do that take some grease and put it in the inter lip of the seal, it help keep the oil in. Ryan-WI Allis Chalmers 916H Allis Chalmers 917H Deutz Allis 1920H Simplicity 7114H

Well, I was able to download the owners manual from Kohler last night. Mendon has it right, they suggest you run at half speed for a half minute or so then shut it down. Ryan - Thanks for the advice on replacing the seal. One thing I couldn't find on the Kohler sight was an exploded parts manual. I sent an email to Kohler to see if they are available. If I get one, I'll try and post it on here.

Mike, I have an electronic copy of the KT17/19 series II parts manual. It's too big to post (1.2 meg). If you want a copy, send me your email addie. I also have an electronic copy of the service manual for the engines (5.1 meg). I can send that as well if your interested.

As others have said, i've found that my kohler engines backfire unless i idle them down and run for a few minutes. Our Kt17 used to backfire until I replaced the points and set up the carb properly,
