Electronic ignition upgrade for Kohler K341S?

Recommended Posts

Would adding an electronic style ignition to a Kohler K341S be a worthwhile upgrade? Or does the stock points and condenser last pretty well? This is the first tractor that I've had with a Kohler, so am not familiar with the engine.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

I don't know what model # engines are on 2 of my welders but they are 70's vintage kohler 10 hp. Both of them have cheap little electronic ignition units on them and they work fine. I had a 12 hp with a larger ignition unit specifically designed for it that cost more and didn't work any better. The units i'm using now say they are for small briggs and stratten. They are a polished silver color and about an inch square and a 1/4 inch thick. been going for about ten years now. I just bought a set of Briggs points and condensor for my 3112-v. I have no idea why I didn't convert it. I'm sure it would have been cheaper and less troublesome. Not thinking

Hi Gents, I thought the cheap electronic units only worked with magneto systems like the small briggs lawnmower. If they work on a kohler battery/coil ignition, let me know. I know you could put an automotive MSD brand capacitive discharge system on it for about $70. Your points from the battery/coil system should last many years. If I remember right, in my car the points lasted about 10,000 miles -- don't know how many hours that would be, PLUS the car fired 8 times instead of one (like a single cyl Kohler), thus the car had about 8 times the wear factor of the Kohler. bobjack

The Kohler points/cond setup is fine & lasts well. Makes it easy to properly time the engine. And the $ is not out of line-surprising for Kohler!!! Bill

I'll just stick with the stock ignition setup then. Thanks for the input everyone![A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]
