What Am I Missing? Axle Shaft Removal

My 2010 Mutt has developed a lot of slop in the left hub and axle shaft keyway. I have a spare transmission (3 spd) that I wanted to pull the axle shaft from. I don't want to get into a complete transmission swap. The differential is off of the spare with just the hub remaining on the axle tube. The left hub is still on the shaft. When I try and pull the shaft out from the left side it gets most of the way and then hangs. 8C I've looked through literally dozens of posts using the search and I can't figure out if I'm missing something (Should it pull right out?) or if there's a problem with the shaft. The shaft looks OK, no rust or scarring & it turns fine. My camera is spotty in terms of working correctly, so if this can be answered without photos, I'd appreciate any help.

Have you removed the retaining ring part number 154291? It is Z in the diagram. It is on the axleshaft on the right hand side. If you have the differential off you should beable to see it. If you don`t remove that the shaft isn`t going to come out.

You guys have 1000x more experience than I, but the differential gear won't come off without that ring removed, will it? From the author's description, the only thing on the tube right now is "T", the hub, unless I misinterpreted.

He did state T was on the axle tube. Z is on the axle shaft as well as the gear X. He may or may not have removed the retaining ring (Z). I was just checking to see if he removed Z since it was`t mentioned and that shaft would not come out if Z was holding it up. There is also two keys in the gear that would hold the shaft from coming out. That is correct the gear would not come off if the retaining ring wasn`t removed. I have had a few apart and the only thing that I can think of that would keep the axle shaft from sliding out would be the retaining ring and the two keys that hold the gear in place.

Hey all, thanks for the responses. I did have the ring off. There was some rust pitting at the end of the shaft, apparently, under the grease that I didn't see. I just had to give it a little more muscle and it pulled through. Ray, please check out my other post on the problem I'm having in reinstalling the differential. I read a lot of your stuff on your experience with differentials in my search and you seem to be an experienced hand at this. I was going to PM, but I figure this way, everyone can learn something. Thanks again everyone!sm01

Site programming updates were made 3/23/2024. As a result some things have changed including dues payment options. We will continue maintenance and work with technicians to regain credit card payment option and clear up minor challenges. On positive it appears attaching pictures is now easier. Good day. Gene
