steering gear lubing - 917

Hello. After removing the cowl for painting, I have the steering shaft and gear assembly mostly exposed (but still mounted on the machine). It is covered with old grease and dirt, etc. What is recommended for lubing the gears? Should I just clean with a brass wire wheel and coat with standard grease-gun grease?
