Timing a k301

Reading alot of different articles about replacing the points and they talk about setting the timing but can't seem to find anything on how to set it.Can someone enlighten me on how to do this. I installed new points & condenser yesterday while I was changing fluids and have not tried to start it yet.Thanks

I set the points at .020 and it purrs like a kitten at idle and top speed and everything in between so I see no need to worry about timing but would still like to know. Thanks

by setting the points you did set the timing...??? you line up the 20 deg BTDC mark by looking through the hole in the tin at the flywheel and set your points. you get the service manual free from kohler here: http://www.kohlerengines.com/manuals/landing.htm
