Check another off the list: weight box

My goal this year is to have all "before winter" tasks actually done before winter! :I Been thinking about a weight box and suitcase like weights for a while now; finally decided today was as good a day as any. I wanted suitcase style weights for a couple reasons: 1) obviously because they're easier to deal with than lifting an entire one piece structure, and 2) so I could choose to hang some off the front if/when needed. From the bumpers we make at work, we end up with a lot of 2x5 box tube which seemed a sufficient holder, so I cut out 12 of them to 16" lengths. Figure I can always make more! I capped one end of each, filled with sand, tamped and filled repeatedly until at max capacity, and then capped the other side. A quick grind and here was my end result (pics taken once back at home). It utilizes my ugly but effective multi mount hitch. I'm sure I'll get bored and design something "prettier" to cut out on the plasma table this winter for a better weight box, but I think this will do just fine until then! Must be some welding slag causing one of the weights not to seat flush, but I can take care of that when I paint it. I'll also prolly end up slipping a ratchet strap around just to avoid some clanking and chattering. With all 12 weights and including the box, it weighs in at about 270lbs. Once I fill the tires and put my wheel weights and chains back on, I'm hoping traction will be of little concern :D

Oh the wheels will have weight too! :p Naw, I'm not too worried about it. I did try to keep the weight inboard as much as a weight box can be. But a lot of guys seem to run weight boxes and are pleased. They help cantilever some of the weight off the steering which can get pretty hard with the weight of a blower hanging off the front. Now I wouldn't try it with a box store lawn mower... But a 270lb weight box can't be much different than the couple hundred pound ground engaging implements these things were designed to hang off the back.

Looks good in the pics. have to agree with you on the hangging wt., even though I just run wheel wts, think a tiller must come close to that. Not sure how much but you could have gained some lbs had you filled with cement powder instead of sand.

Nice work! I made a hitch to mount a couple suit case weights off my 5116 and ran it for two winters like that. I beleave it's about 150lbs. That's a pretty light duty tractor when comparing to yours. You won't have a problem.

Well, it took FOREVER for everything to dry with as cold as it was. Apparently I was just a few days too early, as it was near 80 today :O But everything is all painted and ready to go. Now we just need some snow!!! :D:D
