Catastrophic sickle failure

Recommended Posts

After repairing the pitman arm, and doing a little bolt tightening, I was doing some fun weed dropping with the sickle mower. It was working great until this happened.

The bar broke right in the middle of one of the factory rivets. The outside end slid out about a foot when it stroked.

This piece made a lot of noise real fast

All there was to do was go back to the house and take it off the tractor. I suppose some day I'll try to fix it, but not for a while. I'll have to find some source for a new bar and probably some new teeth and guards.

I was running at 1/2 throttle, probably less. On close examination of the break, which can't be seen from the pictures, it appears there was already a significant crack where it broke. Oh well, half the fun is fixing the stuff that breaks.......
