Oh this cant be good

I was doing a final cut on the grass yesterday with the sunrunner(8hp B&S)When it made a noise that would surely bring a relative out of a coma. I tried to restart it and it spins freely...too freely like it has no compression. I inspected the outside of the engine and the block isn't ventilated. Can someone tell me what likely happened? I am thinking connecting rod or wrist pin? I have never been inside a small engine and am trying to determine if a tear down is in order. Oil level was full.

Check the key in the flywheel. if that is good. next step would be to remove head, and see if piston goes up and down

Pull the plug out and insert a screwdriver in til you hit the piston. Turn it over by hand, if the screwdriver moves your still connected. Could be a valve but from your description of the noise sounds like your piston is disconnected.

I had one like this. Just kept spinning when you stopped the starter, like there was no compression. It ended up being a stuck valve
