rear lift cable for 7117, length & thickness?

I am interested in making my own rear lift cable for my 7117. I purchased one from Simplicity and it only lasted one season and broke. They charge too much for it and I would hate to pay that price too often. Once in awhile I see them on eBay but they go fast. I have several designs in mind, but I need to know the length of the cable, including the rod ends. I called Simplicty dealer and they do not know the dimensions, only the part number. Does anyone know the total length of the cable, plus the cable size? Thanks, MR

If they are breaking that easily, I would check to see if bushing is free in pulley or make sure the cable guides are in place to keep it on the pulley. http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=jgEBGP_eqQ0tG5EPa7mRgtLvBCd6

I think this is the place that makes the cables. 8D dOd http://www.assemblyspecialty.com/ dOd That might be the good news.:D That bad news is is that you probably can't afford to buy JUST one.wah

The cable is 3/16" DIA. I just bought mine at PartsTree.com. I looked one up for yours and it's only $24 (plus shipping). They combine shipping and I found lots of stuff I needed. It would cost you that much in parts and more in aggravation. But these should last a very long time. You should find out what is causing the premature wear. The P/N is 1673700 Page: http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=simplicity&mn=1690479+-+7117H%2C+17HP+Hydro+w%2FTurf+Tires&dn=16907

The cable above is the one that lifts the deck not for rear lift.

wow, it is 38.77 inches long? Actually, I was trying to recall and thought that it was at least 3 foot long. How did you find that measurement for the cable, none of my books or websites that I visited have any dimensions? Partstree.com? For the lift assembly for the front, i.e. the number you gave above, partstree says the length is 20.88 (1673700). What P/N number did you have for the rear lift cable? thanks, MR

I've run across guide pulleys that had burrs on them too that helped tear through the cables. I made one up for my 914 out of lighter garage door cable and it hasnt broke in two years of tilling and plowing the garden. I think I driled a hole in a sleeve made from round rod and slid the cable through the hole. Then took a heavy chisel and gave good whacks with the hammer and compressed the sleeve on the sides across from eah other and then top and bottom across from each other a little ways away from that. you have to hit it hard enough to compress the cable tight inside, but not hard enough to cut into it. Did the same method when I made up a cable for the T-16 when I was building on it years ago.
