the VA Hospital next to where I work uses a broadcast spreader like that (albeit larger) on either their bobcat or JD with front sweeper to do the sidewalks. I noticed they had a rubber mat attached at the top rim of the bin hanging all around the front (tractor side) of the spreader... it wrapped half way around the bin... and hung down probably almost a foot below the broadcast wheel....that way no salt was spread on or under the tractor itself... looked like it worked well to me...

My 4041 was used by a church to plow thier sidewalks and spread salt. The tractor had salt in place you couldn't imagine when I got it. The salt had nearly ruined the tractor, I wouldn't recommend mounting a rear broadcast salt spreader on any tractor. Here's what the bottom of the carburetor looked like, the salt had even penetrated the bowl gasket and corroded the pivot for the float.

As for breaking up ice, I did the same thing as NandoG with the 4041 today, using down presure on the blade. The blade got under the ice and just rolled it up. I had to go in straight lines since the front wheels were off the ground, bit it did an amazing job on the ice. John U
