Atlas Snowblower question

Recommended Posts

dentwizz
I have a mid 80s Atlas/Mtd snowblower powered by a 5hp briggs. Single stage, clutch driven auger. Engine runs good, drive chain is new(I just replaced it). Cog teeth are not worn excessively. The question is, why when I engage the auger clutch I get a loud BANG as it begins to spin. After the initial bang it is fine until the next engagement. I am not getting clutch slip and the band brake that stops the auger is engaging/disengaging properly. I have never had the clutch mechanism(under the bell housing) apart to tell whether or not it is a centrifugal clutch or ratchet teeth or whatnot. Perhaps someone here knows?
