Hey all. well grandpa was at an auction last summer and bought this garden tractor... and today i bought it from him. He was told it is a Bolens... any idea on the brand? Its been repainted, and i can see that there is some red/orange paint underneath the green pain by the hitch. Motor is a craftsman i think. What you have there is a Roper built Sears Suburban 12 H.P. The tag on it somewhere will have a 917 prefix. The lever above the right running board is the high/low lever. The engine is a Tecumseh HH120.

haha well im not sure whether itll be any good or not. shifting seems kinda loose. What all is bad about these tractors? and is the rear wheel bolt pattern the same as my B-10? worst case senerio ill scrap the one tractor and put those ag tires on my b-10.

My guess on the age is in the '70's somewhere, and I'm not sure where the tag is, although I would start looking on the back end around the seat/ hitch area.

I hope your ignition is good on that engine. I had one and the ignition died. It is not being made anymore and there is no replacement. That engine does not have points so it can't be set up with a battery-coil ignition either. Good luck. My Tecumseh engine ran great and was smooth and quiet. I loved using it till the ignition died. That Hi-Lo setup is great when moving a heavy trailer or mowing heavy grass.

I didnt think the sears suburbans are bad tractors. Looks pretty well built to me. I would use it as a beater if you can get it going. I wonder if you can put a megafire on it if the ignition is bad?

I'm guessing your Sears Suburban is around a 1970 or so. Stangman1 is right that they were made by Roper, They were really good garden tractors in their day. They have there own following and there are all types of attachments for them including a loader option. If it were me, I'd keep it as part of the collection. I was actually looking for one of those before I stumbled upon SimpleTractors. Here is a link to help get you on your way with you new SS12. http://vintagesearsgardentractors.com/index.html Good luck with it. -Mike

:O Rod; there was an article in Lawn and Garden Collector Magazine that ran in two or three consecutive issues on how to redo the ignitions on the Tecumsehs. Can't remember which issues now but they have email on their website and might even have the article archived. Dave.

Don't sell that sears short they are a pulling machine. I had a Super 7 I worked the heck out of it for years. I had a rock drive then and I would hauled rock in and spread it with the sears,it done a good job.

Thanks ya'll! And yea, it'll prolly be used as a beater! haha! the only attachment i have for it is that disk, although i make be able to convert a couple of my homemade Implements made for my Allis over to this one..... be easier on the nice tractor! :D like this cultivator perhaps? a little rigging and i may get it to fit on the sears 3pt? The spark plug is shot, so i think after i get a new one tommarow, it should fire right up (ran last summer.... part near new battery too). and grandpa lost the key, so im using a thin screwdriver! :DD

I've had a few Suburbans come through here. They are a neat tractor to collect because there were so many color schemes over the years. The key should be the same as the common "indak" key used on 90% of riding lawn mowers in the last 35 years. Can probably pick on up at Lowes or Home Depot. In the first picture the engine kind of looks like it has a points cover so it might be an earlier one without solid state ignition. The early ones have the same points as the Kohler K-series.

Looks like an early Sears Custom to me.BTW Craftsman did sell some heavy duty tractors the FF Series, true shaft driven,hydro,2 speed rear,Cat 0 3pt(not the Sears 3pt)6 lug rear wheels. Not quite as big but comparable to the Simplicity Powermax series.
