Allis-Chalmers went bankrupt back in the 1980's. Anything with enough asset value was sold off. Out of the reorganization ashes came a small company that does, or did, service work on the big AC electrical generation equipment. Later, the new AC bought a company that did oil field service work. The stock is, or was, publicly traded and still listed on the NYSE, altough the company was so small that it never got any press. It was a shame that the old Buda engine and forklift division could not be sold. They made a pretty good engine and real good forklifts. Allis-Chalmers used to be a kind of economic indicator, as AC was probably the most diversified manufacturer in history. In fact, the downfall of AC was that they were diversified to a fault! They made everything from huge electical equipment, to tractors, and even refrigerators and water softeners. The fault being that AC never maintained a sales leadership position in any product line. Therefore their sales volume never got high enough in any one product category to make them the low cost producer, when the bad economic times came along, their cost/unit skyrocketed. Sadly, a quality product alone does not guarentee financial success. Should probably put this in the history section? What do you think?

Let's be thankful that the employee's of Simplicity MFG had the foresight to buy out their company from AC before Simplicity became history as well! Paul
