Onan don't charge

My friend has a mustang skid loader with an onan Eng. It don't want to charge the battery, with it running if you unhook the battery it Eng kills. It's a 22hp. I checked the fuse it good, it's hard for and old fart like me to squat down for any length of time so I would like to know what I'm looking for ahead of time if possible. Any ideas will be appreciated

my guess is stator or regulator... Im not familiar with the 22 hp specifically but the 16 and 20 Hp regulators from onan are big expensive but you can use a kohler regulator instead and its much cheaper.
