I have two AC 916H tractors. One starts and runs fine, the other has a hard time starting. The starter doesn't seem to have enough power but I switched it with a freshly rebuilt one and it struggles too with a full charge battery. I checked all wires and they all are clean and make good contact. It seems like it has too much compression. Could this be a compression release problem or a points timing issue? Brandon

I had an issue with the compression release on my 301. It definitely makes a difference if it isn't operating properly. Also, be sure to depress the foot pedal so the starter is trying to start the engine only, and not trying to turn over the trans and hydro pump. If it spins easily with the pedal depressed, you may have issues in the rear end.

Does anyone have a way to fix this without a camshaft replacement? I can take the gear cover off and look at the compression release. Maybe I could bend the tab up? Brandon

Brett, my sovy did that when I first got it. The fluid was just thick in the winter. Now with synthetic it spins fine...

I actually took the engine down, and there is a thin "hairpin" type spring that hooks over the release weights. Somehow it had come undone. Hooked it back on, and all was much better. Whether it can be accessed through the gear cover, and without pulling the pan, I do not know. Straight weight 50 when it's about 10 below will make it act the same.:D
