Three weeks ago, I have became the proud owner of a '67 Simplicity Broadmoor 717 LT, that runs and mows perfectly. Yesterday, I bought an A.C. 716 6 speed GT with issues. 1. Mower deck not engaging. With PTO engaged/disengaged, nothing happens on mower deck. I lifted the seat and noticed the outside pulley thing spinning rapidly, metal shavings flying everywhere. I touched it, with tractor off, burned myself, oops! Pulley thing and nut/bolt hot to touch. 2. HI/LOW. Don't have low. Pulled lever back, put in gear, tractor did nothing. Pushed it forward, put in gear, it lurches forward. When I put it in any gear, front wheels come off the ground....is that normal? Both belts in place. 3. Parking brake not working. Just needs adjustment?? 4. Headlights not working, probably just bulbs. Where do I find them? I bought the 716 yesterday, and I knew of all three problems before the purchase. I thought $250 for a running and driving tractor with 4 new tires, deck, and wheel weights was a fair deal! Any help much appreciated. I had a SCAG before, but wanted something cool to mow/play with, hence the two tractors mentioned. How difficult is it to repair? And, should I mess with it or pay someone to fix? I am eager to get this tractor working again, and have decent mechanical skills.

The part that vibrates and spins erratically is the one pictured below. Is that the cone clutch part?

Welcome to the best tractor site on the net!:Q You need a new cone clutch. The lining sounds like it's gone. Some members have successfully relined them using a strip of leather. Nice looking machine, I have a 712H that's one of my favorites.

Welcome to the club! You can reline the clutch with leather as described. There are also some on eBay. They are $85.00 new. Make sure you check the bearing in the cone clutch pulley. If it worn out you will replacing it again in short order. You make want to replace to be on the safe side if it is the original bearing. http://cgi.ebay.com/simplicity-mower-tractor-pto-pulley-clutch-cone-3416-/280660368864?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4158a95de0 http://cgi.ebay.com/simplicity-tractor-mower-pto-hub-clutch-pulley-bracket-/270736114461?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f0921431d

Welcome to the club. I can attempt to help with the 6 speed issue. Prob. #2. Your parts appear to be all there. It is a very simple, external system. The belt tightener moves from the inside belt to the outside belt using the linkage between the frame rails. Without the engine running, and the fender pan raised, push the clutch pedal and move the hi-low handle back and forward. You should see the linkage move the belt tightener pulley from one belt to another. You may need to lube the linkage or adjust it. Correct belts are important, also. They need to be the same length to work properly. That is a nice tractor. If you can't get it fixed, you are welcome to drop it off at my house.:):D Good luck, Jim

Much appreciated! Great info. First, I probably need to download the owners manual. Are these repairs pretty straight forward, just R&R? Or, do you need special tools? How do I 'reline' clutch? Where do I find the bearing in the cone clutch pulley new? Ebay? On to #2. The belts appear to be worn, and one has some cracks, but no chunks missing? How difficult are these to replace, if necessary? I really appreciate the help, and I will keep you guys posted.

Oh, one more thing. Is it safe to spray rear end of tractor with engine degreaser and rinse clean?
Posted
Parts are available at the Simplicity dealer. Light bulbs are available at NAPA. That bearing is expensive. I would make sure it is OK before I just replaced it. You can spray the rear end off. I sent you a PM about a repair manual. http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=ifDCFO9asO3sF4DOk6lEP5NRQpe http://bsintek.basco.com/BriggsDocumentDisplay/default.aspx?filename=heCyEN8coK3rE3CGh54bp796Dq

Thanks Ray. I got you first message, I just haven't downloaded to paper. Will get some ink today, and download it. Thanks. http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=simplicity&mn=1690419+-+716-6%2C+16HP+6-Speed+and+48%22+Rotary+Mower&dn=16622. The bearing assembly, right? Should I just buy all the little parts and bearing?

That link you have above is not a 716. The link below will give you the price of parts. That repair manual is 300 pages or more. I would just download to computer. I would replace what is needed. The bearing is around $50.00 so I would make sure it is bad before replacing it. http://www.jackssmallengines.com/searchdb2.cfm

Sorry Ray, here's the link;http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=s...Mower&dn=16622. When i removed bell, i removed the nut, a washer, and then the bell. Funny thing, i found no key. The lining on the bell looks good. When disengage pto, mechanism moves inside. When i engage, mechanism does nothing, it barely moves. I can move it with my other hand, while i push/pull center pto. How do i get the rest of the parts off? Do i try and pry the other parts off? If i find and replace key, will this help? Here are some pics.

The above link doesn't take you to the exact location.Anyway, I found this at partstree; P.T.O. Cone Clutch Group (7010 & 7016) parts for the Simplicity 1690419 - 716-6, 16HP 6-Speed and 48" Rotary Mower. It's a diagram of the PTO for my tractor, and shows the individual parts and price new. I'm going to call around tomorrow and see if any dealer has this key. Let me know if the above pics look normal or abnormal. Thanks.

The woodruff key I believe is 3/16" X 3/4" which I think is a No. 9. The bearing sure looks shoot to me with that gap between it and the cross shaft. Not sore how you could just loose a key. That driven shaft is around $80.00 if the keyway is shot.

Hey Ray, how would i know if the keyway is shot?
Posted
The keyway looks good to me. It looks like you need a key, a bearing, and probably a new spring. From the picture it looks like the spring is broken. If I remember correctly the sliding conical part should sit against the snapring when the outer portion of the clutch is not installed. I have lost a couple bearings and also had one of the springs to break. If it is a broken spring, you will probably need the two centering washers, and the inner snapring may be damaged also.

I just read the above topic about the cone clutch repair. I had no problem getting the bell off, I just removed the nut and washer, and it slid off. Is that supposed to happen that easy? Now, the pulley and bearing will not budge, is this normal and how do i remove it? Penetrating oil and a brass hammer? By the look of the assembly; nut, washer, and absence of a key, the previous owner had no idea what he was doing and didn't read the manual!

I'm about to place an order for all new parts for pto cone clutch, except pulley, cone clutch bell, and driveshaft. I was unable to locate the 'key' and jacks small engines. Will place order after i find 'key'.
Posted
You will need to remove the snapring on the shaft, then remove the two bolts on the pivot mechanism and the nut and spring from the actuator rod. That should let the pulley and bearing slide outward and off of the shaft. Once the pulley is off you can check the condition of the clutch spring, the two keeper washers, and the inner snapring.

The shaft looks pretty blued to me indicating that it has gotten pretty hot. Would this indicate bad bearings? Or too much slip in the bell? I have recently parted out a 7016-6 including the BGB and a Clone clutch. Let me know if you need any parts. kencheyne@gmail.com

Check the wiring for the lights before you get new bulbs. From the pictures, your engine is missing the heat shield that is supposed to protect them from the muffler. It's an easy fix if that's the problem. Welcome to the club.
