Okay, I tilled the garden up yesterday with the 64 Landlord and now the passenger side rear axle is dripping oil, slow drip, appears to be an axle seal. Is there any quick fixes? I have very little mechanical skill and fear tearing it apart. My 65 Big Ten also is dripping some oil, slow drip, from the bottom of the rear axle housing. Is there any quick fixes for this versus splitting the case? Thanks Chris

Remove the wheel, hub and diff, clean the Axel tube, (I use strips of emery cloth). Drill a small hole in the metal part of the seal start a sheet metal screw in the hole part way then pry on the screw to pop the seal out,you may want to drill both sides of the seal and go back and forth. Check the axel tube to make sure there are no burrs, file down any you find. I use a little grease on the seal and tube to make it slide easier tap the new seal in and put it back together. Good Luck

If you have added oil recently it may be too full. Most of these transaxles have a street ellbow to check the oil. They are supposed to be filled to the bottom of the street ell. I take the street ell off and use a plug instead. I let the oil drain out to the level of the opening, and then install the plug, usually fixes most axle leaks.

One trick to installing the seal is to wrap a plastic bag around the shaft and slide the seal over it. This will help prevent any damage to the seal while it slides over the shaft.
