Hi I am almost affraid to ask this question, but... I finally got my remaining Sovereign running today. I noticed a fair amount of travel (back and forth)on the crankshaft as the engine was running. Is some travel OK (hoping!) or should there not be any? What internally would be suspect? Appreciate your help. Rick

What engine? I IIRC Briggs is .002-.008 on all models (except a very few) and Kohler is .003-.020 on K-series 241 and up. This of course is in reference to the longitudinal axis. If you meant the crank is bent, I could not speak to the maximum bend allowable but zero would be best!! And if you meant wobble, as in crank support bearing failure, it should probably be .0005 but zero would be better. Assuming we are talking about end play or thrust, there are paper shims used to control thrust on the crank. If it was ok and now all of the sudden it is not I would think bearing failure would be the culprit, however the only way to know is a tear down. I think I would start with mounting a dial indicator to the front of the engine and check it.

I don't know what engine you have but crank end play is measured in thousands with a dail indicator or feeler gauge the older cast iron in the .002 to .008 some of the larger .003 to .023 range. You shouldn't see the crank move probably internal wear at the sizeable thrust washer or crank supports.

Hi Thanks for the replies. Sorry I left out that it is a Briggs 16, single cylinder. Longitudinal is what I am referring to. This is the first I have had this engine running. Sounds like a possible tear-down if it is out of those tolerances. Not excited about that. Really appreciate the info. Rick
