1971 AC 310 Vari-Speed BGB Output Shaft Problem

Help! Have a 1971 Allis Chalmers 310 with Vari-Speed drive, Serial number 04401624. The bevel gear box itself has a little sticky tag on it with 4 numbers and says, "BEVEL GEAR BOX SERIAL NO. 2732". My problem: Bushings inside the hub of the small pulley on front of Vari-speed spun on BGB cross-shaft (driven shaft) and ate the shaft (tapered it toward the box). Is that shaft the same in different BGB's? Anybody know what might fit/interchange? My shaft only has a keyway on the L side, no threads on the shaft end and no pulley as I have no power attachments that run off it. Also noticed that the front pulley Vari-speed adjusting yoke has been sorta chewed away to 'tin-foil' thickness on the lower arm (opposite the upper one with the post that fits in the bearing housing retainer) due to the inner half of the pulley running at an angle on the shaft (don't think it normally ever even touched anything at all) and the outer half of the pulley has 3 holes in it that are very, very worn (still have half the bushings left on one side, but holes are about twice as wide as normal due to wear on the other side of the holes). I could weld the yoke and bore new holes in the pulley between the old ones, but I'd imagine the bushing inside the hub that ate the shaft also wore the inside bore of the hub of the pulleys (or the bushing itself is worn on its outside) as it slips pretty freely through the pulley - (but very little sideways wobble, so I don't know if that's normal so the pulley sheaves can slide easily to adjust speed or if it's due to wear inside the pulley hub itself or the outside of the bushing or - ???). What's NORMAL??? Maybe I just need a whole new small pulley (inner and outer), the bushing, spacer and adjusting yoke in addition to the shaft? Also wondered if anyone could supply bearings/seals for rebuilding the BGB? Had to use a little heat to get the front driveshaft yoke off and that seal is definitely fried! Figured I'd just do it all while it was apart. I've been mowing with this tough little tractor ever since we got it brand new when I was a senior in high school . . . 40 years now - I'm feelin' pretty LOST without my little orange Buddy! :( Thanks for any assistance you can offer! THANKS, appreciate it and am sure glad you guys are here! Never even thought about looking before 'cause I never had a problem! Called my local Allis dealer yesterday and they acted like I had just walked in from the Twilight Zone or something! Guy sounded awful young on the phone though and it was close to quittin' time too! sm04 Apologize if I seem confused, but . . . I AM! Remember, I'm sorta new at fixing this little guy, it just never gave me any trouble (for 40 years of mowing, blading and plowing!) and am a bit confused by Simplicity vs Allis vs "Series 300 is "different" 'cause it was truly made by AC" comments I've heard, etc, etc., so I've got some more questions. Does the brand, horsepower or year matter at all if I can find used? What years would interchange if I could find the whole box used? Which Simplicity is closest to the AC 310? Is there a particular Simplicity Model/Year or Parts Group that I need to use to find the same parts as a '71 AC 310? I've found several exploded view schematics and some part number lists on the 'net but it seems like they're all a little bit different and I'm not sure which one to use as the ones I've found are all for Simplicity models! To me all the shafts in the diagrams look about the same except some seem to have a threaded end with a short keyway on the L and some (like mine) don't have any threaded part and a long keyway. To me, as long as the part that's inside the box and what sticks outta the R for the Vari-Speed pulley is the same that's all that matters. Sure appreciate your help!

I think you will find that the drive trains are somewhat interchangeable.... its the frame, steering etc that does not have a simplicity counterpart. your BGB is like my 310... short stub that sticks out the L... all my other 3/4's have the longer shaft with the threaded end on the L. As mentioned for the variable you need a bgb from another variable.. simplicities of similar age also have variables so that is an option. If you look in the classifieds I thought Burntime had a variable BGB for sale. If you look around you can certainly find 310 parts used... as for new... if you want to talk to someone who can usually answer your questions right away call Sandy Lake Implement. they advertise here on the front page they are in Sandy Lake Pa. If it can be got new (and many times used) they can cross reference it and get it to you.

Thanks! Just found the Classifieds here and will get in touch with Burntime and also give Sandy Lake Eqpt. a call today 'cause I'm gonna need seals and bearings too! This site is great! sm01
