Mega-fire ignition

I have some questions about mega-fire ignition modules. I decided to install one on my 7016 with the 16hp single cylinder briggs to try to reduce with overheating issues. I got it all hooked up and works great when it is running. The problem is getting it started. It backfires really loud at first. Do I have some carb issues or is the timing off? Thanks, Justin

Think I got it figured out. Changed spark plug gap to .020 and no backfire.

That's a problem I had. I came to the conclusion that the Meg unit fires on every stroke causing a backfire versus the the point connected way that fired on every other stroke where nothing happened. I ended up wiring the Meg unit thru the existing points and my problem went away. I made a wiring diagram, and if you are interested, OM me with your E-ail address and I'll send it to you.

I had did some checking on this site about my problem. Found a topic and seen your diagram. Will keep it in mind for future issues. Looks pretty simple.

The Nova II must be different. They look the same. I have never had to adjust the spark plug gap on the Nova II.

Interesting problem. I installed the Magnetron coil on my 243431 Bob. The engine is EXTREMELY hard to start. So much so that I have to pull the aircleaner and block off the intake with my hand to get it to pop. Once it is running, I get fuel weeping from the carb at low RPM. The engine backfires a little. When I apply a load, like during tilling, the engine runs ok. The Magnetron must be firing twice per cycle. I rebuilt the carb recently and I'm going to pull off the emulsion tube and look for an oring for the seat.

Since you installed a Magnetron, did you send the flywheel in to have it repolarized?

I was under the impression that it wasn't neccessary to repolarize the flywheel. However, I will if it is needed. I need to go out to the science store and get me an old N/S bar type magnet to see how the flywheel is polarized. I also need to know what the proper polarization is on the flywheel magnet. Also Ray, I still think I have more than one problem going on here. I'll have time to do another teardown when the early tilling season ends. http://simpletractors.com/Club2/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=113800&SearchTerms=magnetron

If it had points, condenser and magneto on originally, it will need to be repolarized or it won`t run right with Magnetron coil. Briggs will repolarize for free. You will have to pay shipping when sent they will pay to get it back to you. Been there done that. The sad thing is that a certified Briggs service technician at my local dealer is the one that sold it to me. Found out here it had to be repolarized. Ran but no power and like crap. Backfiring ect. There is a address on here somewhere. It is in Menomonie, Wi. I believe.

It's in here somewhere Ray. I'll find the phone number and give them a buzz and see if I can just take it to them. It's local for me. BTW Ray, The plant is in Menomonee Falls. It is an outlying suburb of Milwaukee. I smell a road trip in my near future.:D:D
