I really needed some Kohler help Thanks all!

Ok guys. I asked before, but I'm hoping there is an answer somewhere. Kohler CV14S. Command 14 horse vertical shaft. Solenoid on the carb. Engine runs, and runs well enough to move, or even cut grass, but it doesn't run steadily. It is missing randomly, like a loose wire or something. Because of this the PO replaced, with brand new: The entire carb/solenoid package. Fuel pump, and filter. Spark plug. I felt it may be electrical. I got some tips and I replaced: The ignition module and the spark plug, again, just to make sure. I have pulled the valve cover (overhead valves) to check clearance. This engine had the non adjustable rocker arms, hydraulic lifters. I have completely bypassed the tractor electrical systems. Hard wired the carb solenoid to the battery. Disconnected the kill circuit to the NEW coil/ignition module. Unplugged the entire harness from the tractor to the engine (Nanny's, ignition switch, etc. taken completely out of the picture). Tractor has good compression. NO oil sentry switch. Still runs with intermittent firing. What can the problem possibly be? Almost every key component I can think of has been replaced with new. I drove the tractor home almost a mile from where I purchased it. It does run, but poorly. That is why the PO gave up on it. What gives? Help! PS. The tractor is in overall very nice shape and appears to have been taken care of. Upon removing the valve cover, it was very clean internally.

Thanks again for all the help. Running like a fine watch now. Not bad for 52 bux. :D

You treated it too nice! Let the oil get dirty, leave it out in the yard for a few weeks, and it should be purring like a kitten in no time!:D I am curious now to see what the experts point out...I would be stumped too!

I need more of "Uncle Al the kiddies pal" input. :D

Try running around with a loose gas cap and see what happens.

And if thats not it maybe the screen in the fuel tank pickup? Do a temporary gas tank and see if it helps. My two cents Greg

Did the lip lock on the fuel tank and blew pressure to it. No change.

Have you checked to see if the flywheel key is sheared off? Thats a "Key" component. lol

You said you checked or replace the coil/ignition module. Double check the air gap, clean the surface around the coil and all of the fly wheel and around the magnets. Dust and dirt and RUST will cause your problem If not completely stop the spark. Do NOT use emery cloth sand paper to remove the rust. Emery cloth has small particles of metal in it and will cause a problem as you described As well as the rusty fly wheel can. Clean with a little solvent on a rag. Never paint this rusty area. Some paints will short out the coil process. Your white kill wire could be rubbing to ground some where. Or your governor is completely out of adjustment (unlikely). Hope this helps.. Dan H

I could kick myself. Didn't consider that to be likely at all. As it turns out, $1.74, less than 2 bux for a new key way (it was sheared), and the tractor is like a brand new machine (actually, it practically is after the PO replaced the entire fuel system and half the ignition, and I replaced the other half) What a great little tractor for my son in law. :D
