Drive belt question on 710

Recommended Posts

JimV
I finaly put the correct 39 inch drive belt on my 710.The only problem is the gears grind if I start out in nuetral with it running then go to engage it.I can start it in gear with the clutch in and shift it no problem.I adjusted the clutch all the way but it still does it.Will this go away after the belt breaks in? The problem is the main pully isn't stopping when it should. I would appreciate any advice. thanks Jim V.

I suspect that you do not have the "retaining fingers" adjusted properly. These steel fingers are located near the pulley, and need to be adjusted so that they are very close to the belt (when the belt is under clutch tension). When the clutch is depressed, these fingers prevent the belt from spreading out to its natural curve radius. There is a previous posting from a couple months ago on the same problem. Tom
