mike_sdak Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 In fitting the hood back on my re-engined 917H, I discovered the pepper-pot muffler will not fit under the hood. I need to extend the pipe to clear the hood. The pipe and pepper pot are in pretty good shape, just too short. What is the best way to remove the pipe from the block? There is no lock ring currently. I soaked with liquid wrench, tried a pipe wrench (pretty gently so far) and haven't noticed anything yet. Would it work to get the engine good and hot and then try the pipe wrench? Other ideas?
RayS Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 Run until hot, then use a pipe wrench. Always works for me.
JimDk Posted April 25, 2011 Posted April 25, 2011 I have heated the block around the pipe with my Mapp gas torch. Be gentle, though. The block can be broken by too much force. If you can not get it loose, take the muffler off the pipe and use a 1" pipe coupling and a short nipple. Not as pretty, but it works.
mike_sdak Posted April 25, 2011 Author Posted April 25, 2011 You guys are fast. Thanks for the info, I'll report back when I get it off...
