deutz allis tractor question

I have a 917H. I think it's an early 90's model. The kohler kt17 series II finally died. The tractor is in good overall shape and I am looking at repowering with a vanguard 18HP kit. question is how likely is it that the hydrostatic transmission is the next thing to go? I don't see anything wrong with it but I don't want to put $1000 into it and have something else major go wrong. I was looking at some newer tractors but don't really like anything in my price range and would rather fix mine if it will last for another 4-5 years. I realize nobody knows how long it will last but has anybody had problems with the trannys after a certain time frame, can they be fixed or replaced? thanks, Brad

Trannys are strong! I broke the rear end before the tranny...twice! I know guys like the briggs for running but I have heard it blows the heat right on the driver and it does not have the power of the kohler. Hotrodtractor just did a briggs repower. If you search the forum you may find it. PM him. He is familiar with them...

Sundstrands are known to be bullet proof. It should long outlast an engine. Easier to find a replacement rear end / pump also, vs the mega bucks repowers. Thre rest of the tractor, unless used to death or completely abused will likely outlive us all. 8D

Go for it. If the trans seemed allright before the Kohler gave up, it will probably last forever, or longer.

Brad, My 2cts worth, I have a 916H 16hp Kohler still going strong from 1981 mows and blows snow with the best of them. My testimony to the longevity of the AC and Simplicity tractors no experience with the small frames but plenty of members here will stand up for them. Is the dead motor overhaul able and repairable. Just a thought Tom

I'd buy a good running used Twin Kohler before I'd buy a Vanguard.A 20HP or 18HP will go right in and put you back in business. As far as transmissions there are bunches of those type tractors around for parts.

I would say go for the repower. The 900 series in my opinion are probably one of the best garden tractors made. By the time your 917 was made, the 900 series line had already been in production for many years so your tractor is more refined than the earlier models. If the tractor is in good condition, I'd spend the money and repower it. The DA 912H I bought last year is in excellent shape. I bought it from a 90 year old man who was moving to Florida. It has low hours on it for the year. I even picked up a brand new 14Hp Kohler K321 still in the box engine. If or when the 12Hp engine goes I plan on putting the 14HP in it, because I know I will never have another garden tractor like it. It may even outlast me.

I have a DA917H as well, with KT-17 Series II. It's a bulldog, I wouldn't hesitate at all to repower it. There's a lot of info on this site for doing this.
