sovereign_man Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 I recently pulled the flywheel off of my 16 horse briggs to send for repolarizing but found that one of the fins on the magnetic area was broken off, and was advised to find a new flywheel. With this being said what flywheels can i use on my motor? my dad has a montgomery wards with a 16 horse very similar to mine but the numbers do not match up exactly(mine is 326431 and that one is 326437) that one also would have a ring gear but would it still be usable? thanks for the help.i need to get this thing going as it wont be long until i have to start mowing lawn
BLT Posted May 3, 2011 Posted May 3, 2011 The two engines are basically the same, your fathers being a newer cosmetic variation then what you have. One of those variations could be electronic ignition. If your dad's flywheel has two red stripes painted on it you are good to go, no polarization required. Ring gear shouldn't interfere.
sovereign_man Posted May 3, 2011 Author Posted May 3, 2011 thanks for the reply, i might tear into that motor tomorrow. As for the electronic ignition, it does not have that it has points just like mine.
RayS Posted May 4, 2011 Posted May 4, 2011 I would change the back plate of the shroud and go with the ring gear starter and get rid of the starter generator. Nothing wrong with starter generators but the ring gear starters spin faster.
sovereign_man Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 last night i tried the flywheel and the ring gear rubs on the mounting bracket for the ignition armature so i am back at square 1.
RayS Posted May 5, 2011 Posted May 5, 2011 Do you have the armature air gap set at .010 - .014? If yours dads engine had points it would still need to be repolarized. If after setting the air gap and it still rubs the armature then I would think you have a bearing issue.
sovereign_man Posted May 5, 2011 Author Posted May 5, 2011 I took the armature off and the flywheel rubs on the bracket that the armature screws to, but the other flywheel clears this by a quarter inch or so.
