Kohler Command problem

Not on a simplicity, but an exmark zeroturn. I had this happen once before but can't remember exactly what was wrong. Kohler Command CV22S. Won't start. Crank over and no spark, just as you let go of the key switch to stop cranking over, one last spark. Repeat cranking and nothing until you let go of the key again. If I remember right, it was the ignition control module that was bad and I replaced it and all was good to go. But not exactly sure and want to run it past some experts before I start throwing parts at it. Happened about three years ago and now again, is this a common thing on these engines? Thanks in advance for any help.

Lift the ground wire from the module and then try it.

yeah i bet its grounding out when you turn the key to start position.

Ok, I can try that. I did check on it on both sides, and it is doing it on either side, exactly the same way. If it is grounding out, then what do I do, leave the ground wire off?

Keep looking backward until you find a bare wire. If it goes all the way to the ignition switch, your answer is there.:D

Try turning the ignition to the on position and then using a jumper from the positive terminal of the battery to the terminal on the starter. It should start right up if I read your description correctly, in that you have ignition in the "on" position but not in the "start" position. The next step would be to figure out what is grounding out your ignition in the start position. Could be a bad ignition switch. If the jumper worked then you could always just hardwire a jumper with a push button switch in it, then turn on the ignition and hit the button to start. If it doesn't start with a jumper, then I am at a loss, since you say both modules are acting the same.

thought I would bring this problem up to date. Tried turning key on and running a jumper wire from the battery to the starter solenoid, and when I did this absolutely no spark with the key in the on position. Called the dealer where it was bought new and they suggested that it might be a bad key switch as well, and told me to try and disconnect the white(kill) wire on the engine and then try. Did that and tried with the key switch again and same thing. No spark until I let go of the key switch and then one last spark on both sides. Almost 100% positive it is that little spark module again. It is on the one side and has two yellow, two brown, and a white and red wire coming out of it. One yellow and one brown go to each of the coils, and the white connects to the white on the wiring harness. Did not trace the red but assume it is power lead coming in. This box is on the side and is about 3/4" away from hydraulic tank. I think this is the second time it has went out. Think I might have to make a small heat shield between it and the tank to help keep the heat off of it. I took down all the info off of the black box and the engine and will call the dealer today and see what they have to say. Hopefully I get it fixed in the next day or two. Lawn is getting long!!!

Ok, found the problem. And ridiculously easy. Talked to the repair shop today and they said, bring the key switch in so we can match it up and we'll try a new one. Opened up the control panel where the switch is, pulled the plug off the back and it fell right off, pushed it back on good and tight. The key switch was still on and the hour meter started clicking over. New noticed it wasn't before. Tried it and had great spark. Took me an hour to get the rest of the shroud all back together and she's good to go. I wished I would have looked at it sooner. Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
