Tall Grass....

I thought I would toss my hat in on the mowing tall grass topic before it becomes old news. I may be a bit late already. :o) These are pics taken of my Evil Twin, who attends Guys Who Can't Cut It, a rehab organization that does wonderful work with a twelve step program for guys who own umpteen Simplicity tractors and yet have mowing areas over a foot tall. They typically are in denial and offer patently feeble excuses like "It rained every day". This is a '92 Sovereign 18 with a 42", 2010 deck mounted. The 2010 deck is in super shape with tight, slick, quiet spindles. This is good because the '92 drives a deck with a 6" drive pulley and the '66 deck has a 4" drive pulley so the tractor is over speeding the blades a lot. You can just hear it. You do not even want to even think about hitting a big anything with the blades at that speed. However, the deck takes no prisoners and leaves no clumps or chaff at those speeds. What looks like smoke in the pictures is vapor; the deck leaves no clumps or noticeable chaff.

Almost looks like water vapor coming out the shoot, maybe all your rain wasn't SUCH a lame excuss.[:If you mow the oppiste direction so the clippings fly out on the cut it's easier I learned mowing my clover fields in the fall.

I love the tall decks on these things, they do a wonderful job on tall stuff...good work! Before my sicklebar, I used to cut trails at deer camp in stuff as tall as the hood with my 42" deck. I had to run at tiller-like ground speed, but it got it done year after year.

Very nice. I think the sovereign actually needs the blades overspead to give the best cut. My 42 cuts leaps and bounds better then my 48...

Marty, those were the first instructions from my dad on mowing many years ago. He said you were making the engine work a lot harder by throwing the clippings into your next pass to be cut.

Marty, I will grant you that the excuse "It rained every day" does "hold water" pretty good for a while. :D You and Mack get the "teachable moment" award for pointing out that you should mow with the discharge pointing away from tall grass for the reasons you mentioned. Just because it took me 45 years to learn this does not mean I am a slow learner! It means, uh, er, well, I'm working on that. :o):D

What length belt did you use from the top of arbor to PTO? Thinking about doing the same with the Diesel.

Ray, When trying to find a belt length for an unusual deck/tractor match that won't jump off or snap I get them from a local commercial pulley, bearing and belt shop and I can go through quite a few. Fortunately they are not a homeowner oriented shop and don't charge much for a belt. The belt on there right now is 68" (66" snapped) and has not jumped or snapped so far, but they do until you find the "happy medium". I may go longer. I will let you know if I find the "happy medium".

Couldn`t you use a kevlar belt and just move the idler pulley forward or back on the frame side rail?

Pulley D slides back and forth.
