brockway Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Ok so I was mowing today with my 210 and pop my spark plug popped out.It looks like the threads are gone.Any thoughts?
HubbardRA Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 As Mike said, install a Helicoil or some other type of thread insert, such as a Keensert. There are several companies that make the thread inserts.
brockway Posted May 30, 2011 Author Posted May 30, 2011 Thanks guys,Are those easy to do and do they hold up?I do have a extra parts motor, that has a good head on it.
ReedS Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Personally I'd throw your used head on, good time to take a peek at the innerds, clean out the carbon and put a new head gasket on. Nothing wrong with a heli-coil etc. just that you may end up with chips in the bore from installing the helicoil so play it safe IMO. This and a nickel still won't buy a coffee! :p
Al Posted May 30, 2011 Posted May 30, 2011 Hi, If you install the Heli-coil with the head on, coat the tap with gun grease and fill the grooves. This will catch almost all or all of the chips. next turn the cyl to TDC and use an air hose with an extension on the nozzle that will go down into the cylinder inside the spark plug hole. The air will them blow INSIDE the cylinder and out through the spark plug hole around the air nozzle going in the cylinder. Al Eden
Burntime Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 I always wondered how well the helicoils held up. I had a neighbor put one in his harley and then went on a trip thru the mountains. He put on 1500 miles of hard driving in a 2 week span. My buddy also has a ford with a 5.4 which like most of the new stuff needs to be torqued or it strips the 3 threads they give you. Well, he has 4 on his 8 cylinder. Guess they hold pretty well!
HubbardRA Posted May 31, 2011 Posted May 31, 2011 If you are careful, you can pull the head to install the helicoil and then reinstall it with the same gasket. I have re-used head gaskets many times.
brockway Posted May 31, 2011 Author Posted May 31, 2011 Thanks guys,I put a different head on after I cleaned the carbon off and now she runs great!
dynodave Posted June 1, 2011 Posted June 1, 2011 Hi Rod I noted the difference between the old head gasket which have a double sided metal look to them. The new ones I bought have a black coated composite look to them. On another line of machinery the same change happened on their head gaskets. The black coating is a thermoset glue and I no longer can reuse the head gaskets and they must be scraped off after the heads get heated. Is this not the case also on the briggs gaskets? thanks Dave quote:Originally posted by HubbardRA If you are careful, you can pull the head to install the helicoil and then reinstall it with the same gasket.
