TommyK Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 My old B/S engine repair manual has a section with instructions for converting a B/S gas engine from gas to diesel. It doesn't work like a purpose built diesel. Apparently this was common for single home electric generators, back in the day. It involves either a partitioned fuel tank or a second tank. The doubling up on the head gasket. The engine is started on gasoline, then once warmed up, a 3-way valve us slowly rotated to switch over from gas to diesel or kerosene. Has anyone done this? It may not be economical now-a-days, since I think this was done when Diesel and Kerosene were much cheaper than gas.
RayS Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Kind of interesting setup. You will need a tank a different cylinder head and a different spark plug. Maybe other things. The LP conversion would be neat as well.
427435 Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 I's not a diesel conversion. In the 20's and 30's, there were a lot of tractors that started on gas and then switched to kerosene once the engine was warm enough to run on kerosene. A spark was still used to ignite it-------not high compression.

Burntime Posted June 3, 2011 Posted June 3, 2011 Thats what I was thinking Brett...unless he is talking about the diesel with no road tax...
goatfarmer Posted June 4, 2011 Posted June 4, 2011 Average for gas around here is the $4.10 range. Diesel at the "hook" (Flying J") is $3.85-$3.95, depending on if it's cash or credit. Road use.
TommyK Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Time was Diesel was much cheaper than gasoline. No so much today. I think, today gas is higher than Diesel. But they flip flop as the price for both goes up and down.
