Battery Ignition Conversion

Just read the article by Ken Williams on converting from magneto to battery ignition. A great job!! Have a question out of curiosity-why do you have to use a copper wire rather than an automotive graphite style wire? I have NO electrical background but am curious what the difference would be in carrying the current if you are basically using auto voltage to fire the plug. Anybody???

I would like to know the answer to this one myself. Allows for lower current?? Maybe I should pop on a graphite one and see what happens to the quality of the spark.
