Value of a 1964 Landlord?

I am new to this game but have been very impressed by the knowledge and input of the members on this site. So I am seeking advice. I also was very happy to pick up my '64 Landlord mower for $300 Canadian dollars. I am looking at repairing it now, after cutting the grass 1 time. Now I am at a decision point regarding my new toy. What is it worth. Is there any resale value to a rebuilt Landlord? I like it for my own use but 9HP vs 20 HP, can it do the same work? I don't mind rebuilding it and it is very original. Will having a replacement engine vs a rebuilt original change anything? Is this something that will have value down the road?

1) Don't let the 9HP fool you -- it will perform work comparable to new ones with twice that HP... It has torque that the new, smog controlled ones must make up for with HP and RPM.... Rebuild it if possible, or replace it with a cast iron 10 - 16 HP that will bolt right in. 2) Even if it costs you more to get it running good than you paid for it, if you plan to hold on to it for while its still a good deal... Look at it this way. You will have about the same amount invested in it that a $1500-2000 "box store" brand will have depreciated in the first couple of years. At the end of 5 years, it could be easily worth more than that box store brand.... 3) This is very close to being my personal favorite Landlord -- my favorite is the 10HP Landlord 101 that came the next year.... All this said, if the sheet metal is good and the bevel gear box is not worn bad, I'd certainly say go for it... but it's your money and not mine!

Also, how much is it worth to you? I love my late model 716H and wouldn't sell it for anything (except maybe a trade for a 7790). To me, the tractor is awesome. Now, that doesn't mean I could sell it for $5000 to someone else. Some folks just don't know quality. My dad was stoked when he bought a 12.5hp Wizard tractor from Western Auto. Well, in 5 years time, it's gone through three sets of mower deck bearings, and the bearing mounts are thin sheetmetal. No one builds tractors the same. I don't even think the 400 series JD's are build as durably as the 716 and other AC/Simplicity models. Kind of a ramble, but that's how I look at it.[A href='http://www.wheatfarm.com']http://www.wheatfarm.com[/a]

That is what I am thinking too. I have owned it three weeks and am already attached to it (partly because of this site) and I knew from the time I saw it that it would do the job. Now if I could get some advice on parts please. Is there a good (cheap) place to get these parts? I am not shellshocked at the prices I have been quoted but if there is a central place that works, all the better. The dealer here says the crankshaft is obsolete and not available. Is this true? Thanks again.

I wouldn'd be surprised if it is no longer available. I've heard that the rebuilt short blocks for all cast iron one ones are no longer available... If you must replace the crank, then you may be better off with just replacing the engine with another good used one. For example, here's a 12Hp from the For Sale Ads that would fit...[A href='http://www.simpletractors.com/clubhouse/For_sale_ad.asp?MsgID=1646&mode=short&startwith=0']http://www.simpletractors.com/clubhouse/For_sale_ad.asp?MsgID=1646&mode=short&startwith=0[/a]

How sure are you the crank need replacing???Maybe just cleaning it up with some fine emerry cloth along with new bearings and rod would run fine for years longer than a new engine anyway. Like Kent said, these ole castiron one will outwork bigger hp ones made now. only bad thing about these ole one is the additve nature of them. Personnel I try to buy any parts I can though the supporters of this site just because.MPH

Did as you said Dutch and they responded the next day. Quoted all the parts I asked about and also offered an alternative. They had a replacement 23D for sale. With the machining costs and parts required, including fixing an internal skirt that blew out when the rod went, it was cheaper to buy the replacement engine. I wait by the window now for the UPS truck. Down the road I could rebuild the crankshaft, it is .035 under the only undersize rod that is available! The crankshaft is obsolete so machining is the only option. After the brown van rounds the corner and I am done dancing I will do a final report on S.L.I. but I was very impressed with thier service so far. I knew I was pushing to get something out during the July 4 week and it seems that these guys know what they are doing.
