Caution: Virus alert...

Kent

Recommended Posts

I received a virus this morning from a club member and it seems to be passing itself on via emails from my Outlook Express address book... I've found and deleted two copies using McAfee's Virus Shield, but I'm not convinced the problem is solved. Meanwhile, if you receive a strange email from me, DO NOT open or run the attachment.... The virus is called "W32/Magistr@MM" Sorry for any potential problems.... Kent

Here is a link to more information about the virus, from the Norton AntiVirus site. One additional warning: I was using McAfee Virus Scan at home (came preloaded on the computer), and it did not initially alert on it. I checked and my latest virus definition files were 5/21/01 -- and they did not find it with those definitions. I had to update it to their most current, complete definitions (DAT) file before McAfee would alert on this virus. So, if you are running McAfee, make sure you've updated it recently, or you could also have it....[A href='http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html']http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.magistr.24876@mm.html[/a]

Kent, I received notice from some club members that they received a bogus email from me and they deleted it. That is the correct thing to do. I apologise for any trouble I caused, but my system has now been scanned and the files containing the virus have been cleaned. This virus is a worm that picks up files randomly from your computer and emails them to people in your adress book. Do not open these *.exe files, even if you know the person sending the mail. Rather, email the sender back and ask them if they intended to send an exe file. Powermax_Paul
