Blown briggs 16LTH

I got a call from my cousin Saturday, said his tractor started running badly and lost a bunch of oil. Said when he put oil back in it ran right through. He thought it might be a bad head gasket. I informed him that I believed it was a bit more serious than that. It was a vanguard 16 horse V twin in a 16GTH. I haven't seen it yet, but I alomost certain it has grenaded and put a hole in the block. I am picking it up tonight to look at it, but here is my question: I can get an MTD with a bad hydro, but a very good 18 horse horizontally opposed briggs twin, of a similar vintage. Other than the muffler, if shaft size and length work, are there any other issues I may have swapping these out? Does anyone have experience with these tractors? I pretty much have the Sovereigns down pat, but in the case of the 16GTH I don't want to buy the MTD and have all kinds or problems fitting the engine in. Thanks in advance for any input.

I am taking a flyer that this is the the unit in question, 16LTH 16 1691807 303777 0122-01†. I am sending you two general foot print drawings. It will bolt down OK. The HT engine is a 1/2" closer to the rear then the VT, so clearance will have to be checked. The VT has a 9A regulated charging system for the electric clutch, I doubt if MTD does. I am guessing shaft sizes will be the same. The exhaust system could also be a problem. The rest is up to you.
