B-1 Loader Project

Thought I'd share a project I had been working on (or rather, stalling on) most of the year. Back in March I was able to pick up this B-1 loader from mikesta here on ST. At the time, I was getting my ducks in a row for my restoration of my Big Ten, and it just so happened, my company has a lane from Seattle's Old Dominion terminal to my office building once a week. I worked out what I thought was a very fair deal with Mike, who was EXTREMELY helpful and loaded the old girl and some other goodies on a pallet for shipment. It took a week, but it arrived unscathed for about $120 in freight. (at LEAST 2193 miles) Anyhow, I had it blasted and painted her up with the Big Ten so everything would match, then time got away for oh, 7 months or so, and today she's getting the finishing touches. I was able to find a rebuild kit for the Cessna pump, had a couple replacement lines made up, and fabbed a new front bracket and one new rear bracket for the old girl. For what it is, it functions great! I don't really intend to do much 'work' with it, but do have some sod piles I'm going to move out by the garden, use it to haul my plants when it's composting time, and might even move some landscape bark and stone next summer. I have a half dozen small suitcase weights I'd like to build a rear bracket for. The package will be mostly for fun at shows, and is something I'm content just being proud of, considering it's pedigree! ;) The Big Ten was a complete teardown and resto (thanks to several folks here who shared tips and resources!). There's a few things I'd do a bit differently, and will on the next one, but overall, I'm happy with the work (my first). As I get other tractors in tiptop shape, I will likely pull the RH lift and HiLo for places they would be better suited to get some real work done. For at least next years shows, it will remain a loaded down Big Ten ^ Havin' a lot of fun learning from you guys (just sent my first renewal!)...here's a product of the madness... A pic of the delivery, then the post-sandblasting Getting my rear mounts and wheel spacers in place (was missing one original mount, and wheel spacers) Here’s where I picked up the project this week. Getting the frame mounted was a pain. Since I was missing the front mount bracket, I had fabbed one when I put the Big Ten back together. Problem was…I did not get the spacing right, and needed to take the grill off and add some spacers to allow the front tabs on the loader frame to slide in. I got my hoses, pins and fluid squared away, and fired the old girl up. After finding that ONE fitting I FORGOT to tighten, we were in business. I cycled it per the manual, and it bled out quickly and was working great! Went for a spin, and was out of light, so maybe tonite we’ll work on decals and some photography. I shot the inside of the bucket with yellow, after some deliberation on what direction I wanted to go with it. It is an amazing ‘toy’! That's about all it will be for me...I feel like I'm right back in the sandbox with my dumptruck and dozers... All I can say it that it looks awesome! My loader is not a toy, rather a pint sized workhorse! I don't think I'd ever want to be with out one!

Thanks guys...it's been rewarding :o) I don't have any big NEED for a loader, but if I did, I would certainly be looking for a hyraulic bucket, at a minimum. That's another story! I got some things squared away tonite, and was able to get a few more pics. It's a pretty neat feel to drive around a loader, being new to it and all.

Zach, it's a trip bucket. There's a lever that allows you to manually trip and dump. There's no hydraulics on the bucket at all, and the valve assembly does not allow for downpressure. To relatch, you lower the bucket while in reverse, and CLICK, she relatches and is ready to go again. This was the first version of the Henry Loader made for Simplicity/Allis. It's still functional, but not nearly as much as later versions. There were two types of this first loader as well, this being the first, the second having a two-part subframe that allowed for more user friendly removal, and had a bit different bucket design. Thanks for the kind words guys...I like the older stuff and am tickled to have an early Allis loader. It will be a long winter waiting for shows next year!^

Yeah, I'm not a fan at all of the heat on that arm. A Nelson can would be better than the pepper shaker, but I need to measure to see if there's even room. It would be tight. I've heard suggestions of a stack too...I'm not sure I can do it, but the wheels are turning...;)

Yup, I'm thrilled it's completed. It will have a few little 'adjustments' when I get around to things. One of the hoses is about a foot+ too long, and right now the Big Ten is runnin' fussy. The trip needs adjustment to allow for better relatching, and some scratching needs touched up on tractor and implement. The exhaust is buggin me, and I'd like to move to a Nelson...and then there's my suitcase weights. ^ It's NEVER done! sm00

Having seen your loader on MTF and now here, you're giving me inspiration to get going on mine! Will be doing some blasting and painting this weekend.

Mine is not as good looking as yours, but here is how the stack was mounted. Used square stock from loader frame as a brace. What you cannot see is the split collar that goes around the pipe and then is bolted to the square stock. you can use an Ac muffler or Farmall from TSC, Farm and Fleet Etc. Harbor freight sells muffler pipe expanders to get the muffler to fit over the stack pipe. Our you could turn an adaptor from a coupler like I did. Good luck!

If your not going to use it a lot, more for show, a straight pipe stack with a flapper is cool and easy to do. They sound cool, look decent, and can be light enough to not need bracing. If you know any electricians, have him bend you a close 90 out of EMT. I happened to have a 90 off an old trampoline frame when I did mine. :D
